My Handwork

Years ago, when I lived in Belgium with my first husband, Klaus, I had lots of time on my hands. My hands, independent creatures, decided they needed occupations. I taught myself to crochet, to knit, even to tat - a very small bit!

With knitting, did I start with a scarf? A hat? Something simple. Oh, no! I started with a Norwegian-type design sweater with a patterned yolk. I took some tips from books, but designed the thing myself. I think it reached to my knees.... The next one was an Aran design, of course. Sadly, I didn't take pictures of those early works. They turned out pretty well, all things considered, and have disappeared into the past.

From time to time, during the past, um, 30+ years, I picked up my knitting. I turned out sweaters and vests sporadically, but there were those doggoned life interruptions like jobs, family obligations, etc. You know!

Now, however, I have time and inclination, and I knit!

On Sunday, March 25, I went to a Foothill Fibers Guild dye day and dyed 10 skeins of wool. Aren't they beautiful! There were maybe 20 of us, gathered around 3 tables with our fiber, cotton, silk, soysilk, mohair, and wool, of course. The colors were gorgeous, and personal tastes ranged far and wide. I got lots of good ideas for future dye days.

The day also resulted in my joining the Guild, a group of 50 or so, mostly women, who weave, spin, knit, crochet, sew, etc., etc. I've been to one meeting, and it looks as if the group will be a great source for inspiration and new info. on fibers, knitting, and other good things.
